Tennis star Naomi Osaka’s Met Gala dress highlights US, Haiti, Japan roots

mainichi– Among celebrities clad in gorgeous dresses at the Met Gala fashion festival held for the first time in two years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Sept. 13 (local time) was tennis star Naomi Osaka in a Louis Vuitton dress.

Osaka, who co-chaired the event with singer Billie Eilish and others, appeared in a gown with black frills over a dress with a red obi-like belt, along with a unique hairstyle reminiscent of feathers.

Her dress was co-produced by Nicolas Ghesquiere, artistic director of women’s collections at Louis Vuitton, and Osaka’s older sister and former tennis player Mari. The dress apparently has elements from Osaka’s roots — the United States, Haiti and Japan.

The Met Gala is held every year on the first Monday of May, but was canceled last year due to the spread of coronavirus infections, and was postponed to September this year.
