Tokyo’s daily coronavirus tally exceeds 1,000 for 6 days in row

mainichi– Tokyo, currently hosting the Olympics under a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency, reported Sunday 1,763 new daily coronavirus cases, increasing from 1,128 cases the previous day and exceeding 1,000 for the sixth day in a row.

Daily tallies are typically lower during weekends with some testing facilities closed, though Tokyo and its surrounding areas have been seeing a resurgence in infections recently in the face of the Delta variant of the strain spreading in the country.

The capital’s state of emergency will last till Aug. 22, covering the entire period of the Olympics being held through Aug. 8.
