A 22-year-old man was convicted of having sex with a 12-year-old girl he met on the Tinder dating app.

Sean Rickard was sentenced to just 16 months in jail Wednesday shortly after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the girl in February in Santa Ana, California.

Police say the two met through the Tinder app eight months prior to the sexual assault.

The girl was originally blocked by the dating app because of her age, but she later created a new account that listed her age as 19.

Santa Ana police Corporal Anthony Bertagna told NBC that the girl revealed her real age to Rickard weeks before they met in person, and (Rickard said he) didnt care.

A classmate of the victim witnessed the girl getting into a car with a Rickard in February and took a picture, which she later showed her mother, according to police.

That night, Rickard took the girl to a parking lot and sexually assaulted with her, according to Bertagna.

Authorities determined the girls identity and began investigating Rickard

Detectives used the girls account to communicate with Rickard, pretending to be the victim, and used a code phrase that Rickard gave the girl, which she was instructed to use to ensure that he was actually talking to her.

Bertagna said: To know that he was in fact talking to our victim, he would ask her “Do you have homework tonight?”
