Well Ed Sheeran has only bladdy gone and done it.

As if this lad hadn’t already had the best year ever – having worked with Beyonce and Eminem to name just two of his 2017 highlights, oh and popping up in Game Of Thrones – he’s only gone and ruddy nabbed the coveted Christmas number one spot as well with his single Perfect.

It’s been a tense battle this week, with Ed fighting with Eminem and his single River and Wham!’s Last Christmas. For a while the competition was wide open, but in the end Perfect managed to block Last Christmas from receiving its first ever Christmas number one chart position.

Yeah, Last Christmas has never achieved the number one spot, and given that it’s a year since George Michael died fans had been hoping this year might be the one. Ed should feel very guilty indeed.

‘Thank you very much for making Perfect Christmas Number 1,’ he said. ‘This is an actual dream come true and I’m very proud and happy. Thank you so much and have a very Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a Happy New Year.’

He might know how to write a banging track, but he could do with tips on how to decorate a Christmas tree. Look at the state of that one!

Ed received 85,000 combined sales this week, split across 45,000 downloads and six million streams.

Eminem ended up at number two, with Wham! just behind at number three. Positions four and five were taken by Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas and Rita Ora’s Anywhere respectively.

Now how will Ed top 2017? Maybe he’ll finally get recruited for that Bond song he’s always dreamed of doing.
