Rachel Riley has spoken out over a video of Jamie Carragher spitting at a football fan and his teenage daughter, following Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United.

The former Liverpool legend was branded ‘absolute filth’ after the clip emerged, showing him arguing with the fan in question.

And Countdown star Rachel has taken to Twitter to discuss the drama surrounding the former England ace over the footage – after he was suspended from his position at Sky Sports.

‘Whatever someone’s done I hate angry mob bullying,’ she told her 545,000 followers.

‘Wish others would show decency and fairness themselves before grabbing the pitchfork, it’s damaging in so many ways and needs to stop.’

Since the video came to light, Jamie apologised for his actions – and has also spoken directly with the family about what happened.

During an appearance on Sky News, Steven Gerrard’s former teammate described his behaviour as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘disgusting’.

‘I have no excuse and it is devastating for the family involved and my own family, but it is my actions which have brought that on,’ the 40-year-old said.

‘You can’t condone that behaviour. No matter what the circumstances, you cannot ever behave like that, it is just unacceptable.

‘There is no doubt what I have done is disgusting. I apologise for it.

‘Watching those clips back it feels like an out-of-body thing, that moment of madness for four or five seconds.’

Following his suspension from Sky Sports, the family have spoken in support of Jamie, and revealed they don’t want him to get sacked from his punditry position.

‘We don’t want him to lose his job. It is not about that. We wanted an apology and explanation, the dad told The Mirror.

‘He seems contrite. Everyone makes mistakes, we are all human.’

While his wife added: ‘He did seem extremely sorry.’
