Jacqueline Wilson has confirmed that Tracy Beaker will ‘get her happy ending’ as she will return in a new series of books that focus on Tracy as a single mum of a nine-year-old daughter.

‘When I realised just how long ago it was since I wrote the first Tracy Beaker book, I thought: if we were in real time, Tracy herself would be in her 30s’, Jacqueline said of her inspiration for the second book.

‘And I’ve always thought that, even though Tracy had lots of problems in her life and a pretty rubbish mum who was never there for her, Tracy herself would be a good mum, no matter what. With Tracy, you get all this mouthiness, all this cheek, all this rushing around seemingly not being scared – but inside, even as an adult, there are a lot of insecurities.’

The book, My Mum Tracy Beaker, will be told from the point of view of Tracy’s daughter Jess as Tracy tries her best to to raise her daughter as a single mother living in a housing association flat in an expensive city, and as one who is constantly in and out of work.

But unlike Tracy who was a mouthy teenager, Jacqueline says Jess ‘is much quieter, more timid and worried about what other people think of her’.

‘But, inside, she’s more confident, and I think more of an adult than Tracy is.’

The beloved series of books saw Tracy living in a children’s residential care home, nicknamed The Dumping Ground. It was later turned into a BBC children’s show which ran between 2002 and 2007 and dealt with many hard-hitting issues including neglect, fostering, and social services.

Speaking to The Observer, Jacqueline added that she is close to finishing the book – ‘I think I’m getting to the end but sometimes things take me by surprise’ – and that it is due for release in October.

Illustrator Nick Sharratt will also return to illustrate the novel.
